How to Program a LiftMaster Garage Door Opener

A LiftMaster garage door opener comes with a remote control that can be programmed to open and close a variety of access points like residential garage doors, gate operators, commercial doors, and whatever else you have it installed on.

Each standard LiftMaster garage door opener looks the same. First, locate the “Learn” button on the same side as the antenna on the motor unit under the panel. The button has an LED indicator light that might be green, orange, red, purple, or yellow.

  • Press and release the “Learn” button.
  • After 30 seconds, press and hold the button you want to program for another few seconds. Release.
  • The LED light will turn off and the corresponding opener light on the garage door motor will blink to confirm that it has been synced.

Yes, it’s that easy!

However, if you have a LiftMaster MAX remote control, the directions are a little different.

LiftMaster MAX remotes work with 315 MHz or 390 MHz LiftMaster garage door openers that have been manufactured since January 1993. These openers are made from the following brands: LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and Sears Craftsman. They typically have green, orange, red, purple, or yellow learn buttons and a yellow antenna wire.

  • Similar to the standard remote, locate the “Program” button on the opener or keypad.
    • The 890MAX and 895MAX require a safety pin or paper clip to access the program button. Hold the button until the LED light turns on.
    • The 893MAX features the “Program” button on the back of the remote control under the visor clip which you press to activate.
    • The 877MAX features a keyless entry pad control panel so you’ll need to press the * button and # at the same time until the keys stop flashing and maintain a steady light.
  • Press and release the button you want corresponding to the opener one button at a time.
  • When the LED light on the remote control stops flashing then press and release the button again. Repeat until the light bulb on the opener blinks. (Don’t press any buttons during this step or you’ll have to start over).
  • Once the light bulb blinks then you can program a different button on the remote control.
  • Make sure you test it out before you have to use it!
